Laura Roberts (2011 Aherne) is in her second year of a Bachelor of Education at La Trobe University in Bendigo and is already making a name for herself, having recently been awarded the La Trobe University/Bendigo Bank Academy of Sport Scholarship.
Laura plays volleyball in the Victorian State League competition and is about to begin a second season playing in the Australian Volleyball League. She is involved with the Bendigo Bank Academy of Sport by being an Assistant Coach to the girl’s squad.
As if that is not enough, Laura also represented Australia at the Asian Junior Volleyball Championships during her GAP year, an achievement that took her to Vietnam and Thailand.
Laura says that she hopes to take the passion and support that she was shown by teachers at Girton into her own career when it takes off.
She cites many teachers as having gone the extra mile for her but in particular she remembers Ms Leonie Lister, VCE Design and Technology teacher (still current), as her most influential and respected teacher.
“I still can’t quite believe the time that she spent with us,” Laura said.
Laura works part time at Paul Sadler Swimland which she began whilst in Year 10 and also goes away as a volunteer coach with the Girton Volleyball Club to the State and National Schools Cup.
Laura will also be working in the Year 3 classes at Girton for the remainder of year and is looking forward to seeing Girton from the inside.
